Architecture Commission, Northern Italy Historic Theatre Tour, 29 July - 02 August 2012
The cradle of European theatre is famously located in Greece. But to track down the origins of European theatre architecture, Italy is the place to go. Here, an architectural form developed that went on to define theatre architecture up until our time.
The newly opened Italian Route of the “European Route of Historic Theatres” is a convenient way to discover those origins. It runs through Upper Italy, the only region in the world where one can follow the history of the theatre from the Renaissance to the 19th century. Some of the theatres along the route will be well-known to the reader while others are true revelations. So let’s ride the timeline and start with the oldest European theatre still in existence, the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza.
